Patrick Kavanagh – Beyond the Poetry of Place

with Ron Carey

Limerick Writers’ Centre is delighted to announce another ‘Great Writers: Great Literature’ talk. The talk entitled Patrick Kavanagh – Beyond the Poetry of Place will take place

Monday 28th Aug at Nelly’s Corner Cafe, 46 Nicholas Street, at 7.30pm

Patrick Kavanagh’s poetry has inspired generations of poets, as Seamus Heaney says, “to dwell without cultural anxiety among the usual landmarks of their life.” In this talk we will ask the question “Is Kavanagh a continuing and productive influence for the contemporary Irish poet?”  We explore Kavanagh’s own evolution as context for the pivotal role that he played in the direction of modern Irish poetry and investigate the challenges he faced as a man of his time. In examining his most popular poetry, forged in the heat of his battle for recognition, we consider if they substantiate the claim that his place as a major figure in Irish poetry is secure.

Ron Carey was born in Limerick and lives in Dublin. He is a prize winning poet and a finalist in many national and international poetry competitions including The Bridport Prize, Lightship International Poetry Prize, Cinnamon Press Poetry Awards, Fish International Poetry Prize, Gregory O’ Donoghue International Poetry Awards, Hugh O’Flaherty Poetry Award, iYeats Poetry Prize and the Wasafiri New Writing Prize for Poetry. In 2015 his first book of poetry, DISTANCE, was published by Revival Press, he was Highly Commended in the Patrick Kavanagh Awards and received a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of South Wales.

Admission is Free.
